Flat 6 Innovations

Why choose our engine over a "Factory" rebuild??

The factory 986 and 996 engine was designed to be inexpensive to create in the higher production numbers. It was never designed to the standard of it's aircooled predocessors like the 911 that could easily see 200,000 miles of trouble free driving. Porsche continued to breed bulletproof engines in the much more expensive GT2, GT3 and Turbo engines, which share lineage similar to that of the aircooled engine and early watercooled Porsche race engines, including the 959, these cars are far from "Inexpensive", like the Boxster.

Making the engines cheaper meant that Porsche was no longer concerned with the second, third or fourth owner of the car they produced, as long as the car made it through the warranty period and people were't complaining- they didn't care. And for the majority of owners, their 986 and 996 engines have been reliable. Unfortunately some owners of these cars have had horrible engine experiences and our research proves that a solid 10% of the cars on the road haven't made it out of Warranty periods without failures.

What we are getting at is this; the factory engine was never a thoroughbred and was never designed to last past it's first decade of use, in fact it wasn't much of a "Porsche" at all due to this!. The factory obviously didn't apply much field testing for the 986 and 996 engines, else they would have found the design flaws before the first car was sold to a purchaser and those things would have been resolved, making for an engine just as bullet proof as the aircooled 3.0 or 3.2, 911.. Now after more than a decade of service, the real issues are being found by independant researchers and innovators that have been and will be more effective than the factory! Thats because we don't believe in disposable engines and making it very difficult for the owner of a car to have it rebuilt by a local Porsche shop by keeping the necessary parts "un-available"

Whats less impressive about the factory engines and program has been the high failure rates of "factory" reman engines. In our experience from tearing down these engines with low mileage shortly after a failure, it is apparent that the factory did only what was required at minimum to restore the engine's health. Updates to engines only consisted of seal upgrades and intermediate shaft bearing upgrades, none of the other issues were effectively addressed.

This has been made clear by the number of inquiries we have received from Boxster owners  that have had 2-3 "replacement factory engines", all of which have failed before their original engine failed. In one instance a customer called that was on his 4th "Porsche" engine and was so tired of the issues that he didn't even use the factory warranty, he did an X51 conversion.

Even the Owner's of Boxsters that didn't have issues early on and got 100K miles + from their original engine will be looking at a rebuild soon and they need to understand that the engine they are "trading in" may be MUCH better than the unit they get in return! This unit could have been a factory flawed and repaired case and it may not last 30,000 miles!! Thats the cold, hard truth!

So now that we have established the fact that  the engine that Porsche produced was intentionally made difficult to rebuild, was never intended to last a "life time" and that the factory rebuild program is marginal (at best) its time to explain WHY the Flat 6 Innovations engine program is a much better choice..

A- It is our goal to ENABLE the engine's "Rebuildability" and to empower your local Porsche shops crew to do the necessary work on your engine.

One of the aspects of the Boxster that attracted me to it for developmental reasons was the fact that it was such a well kept secret. The factory did a good job of keeping engines from being torn down for several years, requiring that each engine be totally assembled when shipped in for a "core" was one of these tactics. The factory didn't train base technicians on the repair of the engine, just trained them to diagnose failures and swap engines with a "New" unit (that more than likely is more flawed than the old broken unit!)

So, a big benefit to our program (and why you should consider it) is the fact that we have a huge desire to train the owners and employees of local Porsche shops around the World to assemble these engines based on our parts and procedures. That means IF you have one of our engines your local shop can come to our facility and be trained on how to maintain it.. That means the next time you have an issue, you won't make a trip to the dealership! Thats a BIG BENEFIT and is exactly opposite from the Porsche mind set. This aspect of our program is the most critical to the future of the Boxster!!

B- Ugrades are STANDARD PROCEDURE!

Our engines have been updated and ALL of them have the design changes necessary to avoid the typical failures. As an example; we don't just repair the bare broken items, we take the time to apply the technology that will keep the engine from failing in the future.

C- Performance!

We offer the ability to purchase "Performance" for the Boxster. This is made possible by our technology that not only makes the engine more robust, but also enhances it's ability to be made larger without any losses of reliability.

D- Future upgrades

Each aspect of our program is made to keep the engine as updated as possible. This means as we find new technology and make strides in development you'll be kept abrest of the  advancements and if you'd like to apply them, or just want some added power, thats a no brainer...

E- Dyno tuned engines

When you buy an engine from Porsche, it hasn't even been test fired.. There are no guarantees that it won't have an issue that you or your mechanic will find after start up.

With our program you won't have that issue as all engines are dyno proven prior to shipping. If they don't pass- they don't leave.

F- We actually care...

And Porsche doesn't... If they did our team would have never been assembled, because the engines would not be failing and by now Porsche would have made it much easier to buy replacement parts and service tools for the engine.

Our program will be here after the Porsche program is discontinued....
